Publishing

How it Works

In the current music landscape, many producers overlook the immense potential of music publishing, focusing solely on income from streaming platforms like Spotify. However, there’s a significant opportunity to earn beyond master royalties—through music publishing royalties tied to composition rights.

We're

here

to
help!

At Bonsai Publishing, our mission is to become a lean, dynamic, and reliable partner for the music scene, helping producers and labels unlock the full potential of their catalogs. Having earned the trust of top Italian lo-fi producers and attracting the interest of international creators, we’re continuously growing our catalog while building stronger relationships with the best talents in the new music industry.

So what the heck
is the difference?

Publishing rights are like the blueprint of a song—they cover the composition, which includes the lyrics and melody. The master, on the other hand, is the original recording of the song.

The difference is that a single composition can appear in many different recordings, like covers, remixes, or new arrangements. Let’s look at this in more detail.

Where do we come in?

Collecting global music publishing royalties can be particularly challenging for independent producers, especially for genres like lo-fi and phonk.

Having a publisher administrator (us yay) is essential to ensure royalties are collected not only from PROs but also from platforms and sources worldwide.

And that's not all...

We’re not only focused on future opportunities; we’re also committed to recovering unclaimed earnings. Through a thorough backclaim operation, made possible by our partnership with Universal Music Publishing, we’re actively working to collect unpaid royalties from past releases. Our analysis shows that our current catalog—responsible for over 300 million streams on Spotify alone—has generated significant rights yet to be collected. By leveraging our expertise and proactive approach, we ensure producers don’t leave money on the table, reclaiming what’s rightfully theirs while securing a more prosperous future for their music.
